, Instagram, online shopping or simply at work: Many of us spend a lot of time on the internet. On some pages we have to provide our private address or bank details. While it often just happens on the side, the internet can become a place where we feel unsafe and stressed.
It depends on the length
For a password to be secure, it must be of a certain length. As a rule of thumb, the word should be at least 10 characters long to make it difficult for potential hackers and identity thieves on the web. If the password consists of just a few characters, you can easily figure it out with a little imagination or trial and error – especially if you know the password owner personally. So the following applies: the longer the combination of characters, the better! Passwords with 10 or more characters are ideal. It can be unusual and, for example, consist of two words that you simply string together – the password already has a considerable length.
special characters and numbers
This information should also be known to every Internet user and is already automatically required by most platforms: A secure password must contain special characters and numbers, preferably in a colorful mix or selected at random. Obvious combinations of words and numbers, such as mixing names and years of birth, should be avoided. It is also better not to use consecutive numbers for sequences of numbers (e.g. 456), but to mix and match numbers (e.g. 926). Special characters and numbers increase the complexity of the password and make it all the more difficult to figure out.
If you move around the Internet, you usually need more than just a password in order to be able to use and protect all relevant areas. Even if it is easy to remember a password that is used again and again: Passwords should vary and be created individually. It is best if you do not follow a strict pattern and bring variety into play. It is important to never gamble on one card and to use the same password everywhere, even if it is a good one or a memorable one. Anyone who needs support can also find the solution on the Internet: there are so-called password managers or password generators that help both private individuals and companies to create and manage secure passwords. They are based on user-friendly software and work with encryption of all information provided.
let creativity flourish
The best passwords are the ones created with a lot of creativity. The beauty of it is that there are no limits to your own imagination. New names or professions can be created, which then flow into the word order. Characters from films and comics are also helpful to make the password “uncrackable”. Invented things and imaginary places not only increase security, but are also fun and make it easier to remember the respective password. They are also a nice symbol, as it is about identity and transaction protection – what would be better than wrapping a new identity in one word?
Increase security with two-factor authentication
The technical side can also make its contribution to security. The question is: How can the security of online access be increased with a self-chosen password? By using two-factor authentication, which is already standard in banking transactions, for example. To gain access to an online area, a numeric code is used in addition to the password, so passwords alone are useless to hackers. So there is no danger that someone can gain access to private information just by cracking a password.
